Did William Turner influence Claude Monet?

While I’ve been researching and reading about Claude Monet and William Turner, I bumped into something uncanny — Claude Monet came to England and was influenced by William Joseph Mallord Turners work. From observing their work I believe they had a similar temperament as well.

The term ‘impressionism’ was coined when an art critic claimed that Monet’s painting (Sunrise, 1872) was merely an impression, rather than a proper painting.

I’ve just seen a painting by Turner (The Scarlet Sunset, 1830) and the way the sun and the reflection of the sun are painted, is uncannily similar to the way Monet painted the sun and its reflection in Sunrise.

Claude Monet visited England in 1870–71, so it’s completely possible that he saw The Scarlet Sunset and was influenced to paint Sunrise. What excites me is that the biggest player in impressionism, Claude Monet, was inspired by our very own English William Turner.
